SNI Shampoo & Conditioner Frequently Asked Questions:

General Shampoo & Conditioner FAQs

Shampoos are the most frequently prescribed treatment for the hair and scalp. The different qualities demanded from a shampoo go beyond cleansing. A cosmetic benefit is expected, and the shampoo has to be tailored to variations associated with hair quality, age, hair care habits, and specific problems related to the condition of the scalp.

Why should we avoid using commercial shampoos and switch to natural?

Regular shampoo can wreak havoc on not only our hair but also our bodies and the environment. Because it contains harmful and synthetic chemicals that are absorbed through the skins pores we are putting ourselves at risk by directly applying carcinogenic chemicals into the scalp. By doing this on a regular basis we are basically inviting these dangerous ingredients in to damage our system and potentially putting ourselves at risk of cancer and disease. Ingredients typically contained in regular shampoos have been proven to reduce the size of hair follicles, irritate and disrupt oil glands, dry out the scalp, which ultimately can result in hair loss.

What does the term ‘natural shampoo’ mean?

These days where false advertising is at large, it is hard to determine what really is natural and generally safe to use. Our definition is to use natural based cleansing agents, and little to no synthetic ingredients. Both our shampoos are clearly labelled with percentages of natural ingredients used and are scalp & hair and are not harmful to our bodies and the environment. We also personally ensure none of our ingredients are produced unethically.

What chemicals should we avoid in commercial shampoos?

When choosing your hair care products you should try to avoid products containing the following ingredients:

  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (unnecessary foaming agents)
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (unnecessary foaming agents)
  • Mureth Sulfate (foaming agent)
  • Siloxanes
  • Silicones (found in almost all commercial hair care products. Read more here (link blog))
  • Derivatives of Lauryl Alcohol
  • Propylene Glycol (Antifreeze)
  • Olefin Sulfonate (Deodorized Kerosene)

The list can go on.

What difference will I notice when switching to a natural shampoo?

Making a change in beauty products always feels a little daunting, especially if you’ve used the same product for years. Once you make the change, however, you may wish you had tried it sooner. Switching to natural shampoo is not only better for the environment; it can also be better for the appearance of your hair.

One of the benefits of natural shampoo, if the most obvious, is you know exactly what you’re exposing yourself and your family to. In addition to the eco-friendly ingredients, switching to a natural shampoo can potentially help your scalp and hair look and feel healthier. Conventional shampoo ingredients help rid your hair of dirt, but they can also strip your hair and scalp of natural oils. While you don’t want to walk around with greasy hair, retaining some of your skin’s natural oil can prevent dryness, which can leave your scalp itchy and your hair rough.

The main difference you’ll notice about natural shampoo is that it doesn’t lather up the same way your old shampoo did, since those foaming agents aren’t there. This doesn’t mean it’s not getting your hair clean, or that you need to use more shampoo than usual. Instead, adding a little water after you’ve started applying your natural shampoo can help create a lather.

Protein Boost 99% Natural Detoxifying Shampoo & conditioner:

Does the shampoo foam?

The Protein Boost 99% Natural Detoxifying shampoo does foam when ‘foamed’ with water between the palms. It is enough to cleanse the greasiest of hair through its action of using coconut derived foaming agents and ‘soap bark’ combined with the cleansing action of Orange citrus peel.

It produces less foam than conventional traditional shampoos which contain too much and harsh varieties such as SLS and similar to trick the mind in to thinking that it is a good shampoo as it has a ‘rich foaming action’, hence more effective. This is just marketing strategies using psychology and the use of harsh foaming agents with ‘natural’ ingredients is counter effective.

It takes a week or two to get used to the lower foam but the results are worth it.

What is Baobab?

While many people know of the baobab tree, not many people know that it has a fruit. The fruit hangs off the tree and looks like a kind of melon or a pod. The outside of which is a brown shell. When you cut into it you will find sinewy flesh-coloured fibre surrounding its oil rich seeds. The fruit is the only one in the world to dry naturally on the branch. This means the fruit simply needs to be harvested, deseeded, pounded and sieved to produce a 100% natural  powder that is exceptionally nutrient-dense.
