I get many questions about hair loss and it’s such a broad topic with so many varying factors from person to person that it would be impossible to cover everything. I will go through the hair cycle in detail in another’s blog post but for now,I have outlined just 3 causes of hair loss.
Hair loss can be for many reasons such as surgery, car accident, severe illness, pregnancy, auto immune disease, or even the flu! This type of hair loss is called telegenic effluvium.
One thing to take note of is that the cause of hair loss and the visible effect of losing your hair can be several weeks or even months apart! So when looking for the culprit cause, let’s rewind a bit and consider these 3 main causes for hair loss.
Stress can be one of the main causes of hair loss. Hair has a programmed life cycle: A growth phase, a rest phase, and a shedding phase. “When you have a really stressful event, it can shock the hair cycle, (pushing) more hair into the shedding phase,” explains Marc Glashofer, MD, a dermatologist in New York City. Hair loss often becomes noticeable three-to-six months after the trauma.
It is important to note that upto 100 strands of hair loss daily is very normal and essential for healthy hair growth. To know if you are losing more than 100 strands a day, run your fingers through 2 inches of hair, if more than 5-6 strands fall out, this is excessive hair loss and it’s time to implement some changes such as the SNI natural hair oil, an SLS and Paraben free shampoo, and a healthy diet or maybe some multi vitamins! Lack Of Protein
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, lack of protein in your diet can cause your body to ration protein by shutting down hair growth. This can happen about two to three months after a drop in protein intake.
Protein can be from animal or even plant sources. Add a sprinkle of seeds with your daily porridge or cereal for a protein boost!
Iron and Vitamin B deficiencies is another culprit of hair loss. Your body will turn on its ‘ration mode’ to supply these essentials to other places of need and it’s your hair, skin and nails that will suffer.
If you wonder if you may have some sort of dietary deficiency, look at your skin, nails and hair. If it’s not in perfect condition to the touch and sight, then it’s time to consider adding a variety of foods into your diet and maybe even vitamin supplements.
However, it’s not always about a deficiency that can cause hair loss. Although iron and B vitamin deficiencies can cause reversible hair loss. On the other hand, Overdoing vitamin A-containing supplements or medications can trigger hair loss, so be sure to consult with a doctor before making any harsh changes to your diet.
